Breast reduction is above all a functional procedure: it relieves back, neck and lumbar pain, painful shoulder grooves, inframammary intertrigo and impairment in sports or daily activities. It is one of the procedures most recognised for its positive impact on quality of life.

Technique varies with the volume removed and tissue quality, but always rests on two principles: preserve areolar vascularisation and sensitivity, and obtain a harmonious, firm, lasting shape. The scar is generally inverted-T or vertical for moderate hypertrophy.

In Belgium, part of the procedure may be covered by INAMI/RIZIV when the weight removed meets the regulatory threshold. A pre-operative reimbursement application is prepared in eligible cases.
